Seabird Rehabilitation Internship

This Seabird Rehabilitation internship focuses more on the seabird rehabilitation process and has been developed to prepare participants for a career in bird rehabilitation and conservation.

 

What will I learn?

This learning experience is divided into 2 sections.

Online e-learning course – completed prior to the first day

This course is desgined to provide you with a sound knowledge base to work at SANCCOB. The course content is developed to provide you with a working knowledge of different types of penguins and seabirds of various ages, types of enclosures they live in, what does daily care entail, handling and feeding techniques and as well as seabird behaviour and signs of illness and disease. Scenarios, case studies, instructional videos and photos will provide the basis for self assessment quizzes that encourage understanding and application of knowledge.

 

SANCCOB – Practical skills development

Depending on the length of your internship, you will learn intermediate to advanced hands-on skills seabird rehabilitation techniques as well as be introduced to other areas such as basic laboratory work, centre management, education and training of others. You will essentially practice and master those skills that you were introduced to in your online course with the added bonus of participating in the release of the penguins and other seabirds you have worked so hard with.

 

Who can apply?

Returning volunteers who meet application requirements, university students, graduates, by Text-Enhance">post graduates, employees and volunteers in the fields of conservation, animal care and welfare, animal behavior, zoology, biology, any other animal related science or environmental management fields.

Programme duration

3 or 6 months

Please note that dissertation projects/other under or graduate research projects can only be completed as part of the 6 month internship. Click here for more information.

 

Work schedule

The nature of the work that you will be doing may see your schedule change on very short notice so flexibility is highly appreciated.

This internship has a typical work day at SANCCOB which is from 8am-5:30pm.  You will never be expected to work past 6pm unless you choose to.

Expect to work up to 5 days a week (including most weekends and public holidays). The work is hard and physical by nature and you will be tired after a day's work. It is therefore advised that you save late nights out for your days off.
