Adopt a penguin pair for Valentine’s Day
We are offering a unique gift that is sure to make your Valentine’s Day extra special this year. Once again, for the month of February, you can adopt and name a pair of endangered African penguins undergoing rehabilitation at our centres. This adoption is the ideal Valentine’s present because African penguins are known for having long-term partnerships and your loved one will appreciate its meaningful expression – you will help save this iconic penguin species from extinction at the same time.
There are only 21 500 breeding pairs of African penguins remaining in the wild and SANCCOB’s rescue and rehabilitation efforts are geared toward bolstering the endangered population. Celebrating 50 years of saving seabirds in 2018, SANCCOB has admitted more than 95 000 seabirds to date at our three seabird centres strategically located in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. Ill, injured, oiled and abandoned seabirds are admitted with the support of conservation partners and compassionate members of the public. Once admitted, our dedicated staff, interns and volunteers ensure that each bird gets the best possible care until they are ready to be releasd back into the wild.
There are various factors threatening the survival of the African penguin, including a decrease in food supply, lack of suitable habitat, predation, pollution and climate change.
This Valentine’s Day you can contribute to prevent the extinction of the endangered African penguin by adopting and naming two penguins from SANCCOB. The adoption donation is R600 for an electronically mailed pack, which includes two certificates of adoption with pictures of ‘your’ penguins, a short history of each bird and a special thank you letter. Your donation will help to buy fish, medication and other essentials needed to rehabilitate our penguin patients.
