SANCCOB Research

SANCCOB is not only leading in seabird rehabilitation in southern Africa but is also involved in a number of research projects, locally and internationally.

Over the last few years, Dr Nola Parsons, our previous Researcher at SANCCOB, and our current Research Manager, Dr Katta Ludynia have worked on a number of aspects regarding southern African seabirds and have published a large number of scientific articles. These articles pertain to aspects of blood parasites and avian diseases often encountered in birds at our centre and also in the wild, as well as seabird rehabilitation, African penguins, and other seabirds in southern Africa.

These publications can be accessed by following the links provided in our Research Library.

They range from general overviews to species descriptions of blood parasites seen, from King penguins to Bank cormorants, thus covering the large variety of seabirds that we see and treat at SANCCOB. All birds released from SANCCOB undergo extensive pre-release health tests to prevent the spreading of any disease into the birds’ natural environment.
