Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) Cape Recife, Gqeberha
SANCCOB is a leading seabird conservation non-profit organisation which seeks to employ a caring, compassionate Seabird Rehabilitation Supervisor to join their energetic and dedicated team based in Gqeberha on a full-time basis. The Seabird Rehabilitation Supervisor will report directly to the Gqeberha Centre Manager and will be responsible for all aspects relating to seabird rescue, rehabilitation, and release.
Key responsibilities and duties will include:
- Supervision of staff, interns, local and international volunteers working in the rehab department.
- Administrative tasks (report writing, budget management, stock control and staff/intern rosters).
- Daily supervision of all seabird rehabilitation activities to ensure all protocols and standards are maintained at the highest level and are according to SANCCOB’s standard operating procedures.
- Daily detailed record keeping of all seabirds in care.
- Seabird rescues and the coordination thereof.
- Maintaining a state of preparedness and response for all seabird disasters.
- Daily care and treatment of various species of seabirds, of all ages, including after hours on-call duties.
- Assisting clinical veterinarians with the treatment of seabirds and attending to all caring requirements of seabirds at the centre.
- Cleaning of seabird enclosures, pools, and hospital areas.
- Maintenance of the facility, rehabilitation pens and pools.
- Provision of high-quality care of resident seabirds.
Key competencies
The successful candidate must be a team player, good at delegating tasks, resolving personnel issues, and establishing good rapport with staff, interns and volunteers. The candidate must be physically fit, willing to learn, hardworking, dedicated, and able to manage time efficiently. This position requires working in all weather conditions, working shifts, weekends, and public holidays, and willing to work overtime hours when needed. This person must be able to lead a team of seabird rehabilitators, volunteers, and interns to provide high quality care to seabirds undergoing rehabilitation and provide effective contributions to emergency responses such as oil spills affecting wildlife. A caring, compassionate individual with a passion for seabirds and a clear understanding of SANCCOB’s mission to conserve wild populations of seabirds is essential.
Qualification and Experience
- At least 2 years’ experience in supervising teams. This includes working with groups of people from different cultures, age groups and personalities to ensure a positive working environment.
- At least 2 years’ working in wildlife rehabilitation, especially seabird experience would be advantageous.
- A tertiary qualification in Biological Science, wildlife, marine or conservation would be preferred.
- Experience working according to standard operating procedures.
- Experience supervising small teams of people.
- Advanced planning, organising, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- A valid driver’s licence and own transport.
- Computer literate (Microsoft Office package).
- Only open to South African ID holders or South African residents with a valid work permit.
- Willingness to travel is essential.
