Bird’s eye view of SANCCOB’s new Cape Town Seabird Centre
This 3-dimensional graphic shows what the new seabird hospital, currently under construction at our Table View centre, will look like on completion at the end of the year.
Construction started in March 2017 and will include a brand new hospital building consisting of, amongst others, two intensive care units, a three-part wash bay area for oiled birds, a walk-in freezer to store increased amounts of fish, an expanded surgery, a laboratory, a medication room and a new x-ray room.
The bottom pen and pool area of the centre will also be revamped to include three new pools, four new pens and an enlarged aviary for flying birds. A new viewing platform at the centre of the facility will offer visitors a unique vantage point over the various pens.
Construction is set to be completed in December 2017 and will enable us to be even more responsive in our efforts to save greater numbers of seabirds, including endangered African penguins of which only 2% remain in the wild today.
Whilst seed funding to initiate the project has been secured from the National Lotteries Commission, we still need to raise approximately a third of the total R14 million building costs to complete the project.
Francois Louw, our Fundraising and Marketing Manager, said, “The vision of a new seabird hospital has been a long-standing dream of the SANCCOB team and we are excited to be embarking on this landmark development for the organisation and the city of Cape Town as a whole.
“In 2018, SANCCOB turns 50 and has treated nearly 100 000 seabirds since our humble beginning in 1968. The new centre will ensure that SANCCOB’s team of dedicated staff and volunteers will be able to save seabirds for generations to come.
“We thank all the generous donors that have donated towards the project thus far and urge other members of the public and businesses to help us make this vital project a reality”.
Members of the public can contribute financially by donating a brick (or more) at just R50 ($4 / €4 / £3) each, by visiting https://sanccob.co.za/donate-brick.php and choosing from the various donation platforms available.
We also welcome businesses to pledge their support by sponsoring building materials required or hosting a fundraiser for SANCCOB. Contact our Capital Campaign Fundraiser, Cindy Correia, on (021) 557 6155 or email cindy@sanccob.co.za to find out more about the project.
